Couchdrop can enable you to create secure users who can interact with folders in the Dropbox account via FTP or SFTP. Connecting cloud storage and SFTP is a core capability of the platform and only takes minutes to configure.
How to connect Dropbox to Couchdrop to enable SFTP access
Couchdrop integrates directly with Dropbox, allowing external clients to connect to a specific folder (or folders) within your organization's Dropbox account via SFTP or FTP.
To get started, you will require both a Dropbox account and a Couchdrop account. Then it’s a case of following the steps below:
- Connect your Dropbox to Couchdrop
- Configure additional user(s)
- Connect via FTP, SFTP, or FTP/S
Step 1. Connect your Dropbox to Couchdrop
Log in to Couchdrop and choose to create a new storage connection. Select Dropbox Team (or Dropbox Personal) and log in via the OAuth window. You can also specify a specific folder within Dropbox to use as the root for your connection.

Step 2. Configure FTP/SFTP users
Next, you'll need to create user credentials for each external user that you want to connect to your Dropbox account. This can be done manually, or you can have Couchdrop autogenerate users with common permission sets, like an external SFTP user, in one click.
With either method, you can adjust and fine-tune permissions and access levels at any time. Each user can be isolated to a specific directory within the Dropbox account as well.
Once you've created the user(s), send them the credentials. They can be sent to any email directly from Couchdrop, which sends the credentials along with server connection details at the same time.
Step 3. Connect via FTP, SFTP, or FTP/S
The users can now connect and interact with your Dropbox through your chosen protocol. The user can also connect through the Couchdrop interface or an SFTP client.

Other Dropbox connection options for external users
If you don't explicitly need SFTP, but instead simply need a secure way to ingest files into Dropbox, Couchdrop has several options that can also work. For instance, your external clients could also upload files via a secure upload portal or even email files directly into a specific Dropbox folder.
There are also tools available for sharing files from your Dropbox account securely, such as using secure sharing links. You can also directly send files sourced from your Dropbox with the send files feature, where Couchdrop acts as a temporary storage to completely separate external users from your Dropbox environment.
All methods include configurable security options to ensure only the right people have access to send or receive files involving your Dropbox account.
