Overview of CrushFTP

CrushFTP makes the claim to provide "enterprise grade file transfer for everyone" and has been a secure file transfer solution for many years.

Originally founded in 1998, CrushFTP started with support for FTP connections, but over two decades has grown to support more than FTP, including SFTP, FTPS, and WebDAV. "Crush" refers to their method of zipping files and downloading/expanding zip files midstream, a method they claim greatly speeds up transfers.

Claiming to run "on almost everything", CrushFTP is compatible with several different operating systems including Windows, MacOS, Linux, BSD, Solaris, Unix, and more. While it's compatible with a number of OSes, it's still a piece of software that has to be downloaded and installed on a device to activate, though access can be done through multiple methods afterwards, such as through mobile apps.

Overview of Couchdrop

Couchdrop lets you send, receive, and automate secure file transfers in one simple platform. Created to modernize SFTP, MFT, and EDI, Couchdrop integrates directly with the modern cloud, including connectors for cloud storage, databases, data warehouses, SIEMs, and more. With no infrastructure management, Couchdrop deploys instantly without requiring servers or VMs and scales automatically to meet any transfer requirement.

One of the primary use cases is augmenting storage platforms. With Couchdrop, you can quickly add SFTP/FTP transfer capabilities to cloud storage like SharePoint, AWS S3, Azure Blob, and Google Workspace. You can also bridge connection gaps between on-prem file servers and the cloud and freely transfer data between them.

Couchdrop makes sending and receiving files & data from partners simple, secure, and intuitive. Choose from multiple methods to exchange files including SFTP, email, web portal, and sharing links. All transfers are configured and fully managed through a modern and intuitive web interface.

Infrastructure & Deployment

CrushFTP Infrastructure & Deployment

CrushFTP is software for traditional file servers, meaning that it requires installation on your own infrastructure. It supports several operating systems, including Windows, macOS, Linux, or any system supporting Java 13+.

The self-hosted approach gives you complete control but comes with significant technical overhead. Your team is responsible for server provisioning, configuration, software updates, and security patching, and even with a proficient and active team, the approach carries risks. For instance, recent security incidents were discovered in 2024 and 2025 that allowed attackers to bypass CrushFTP authentication and gain access to files, and teams that failed to patch immediately had their data at risk.

These kinds of risks are inherent in self-hosted file transfer infrastructure that's exposed to the public internet. No system is immune to cyberattacks, but the response and remediation time is considerably worse with self-hosted systems because fixes have to be applied manually. This is such an obstacle that experts estimate over 60% of organizations involved in an MFT breach were from vulnerabilities that had a patch available that would've stopped it.

For more information on how on-prem infrastructure can be worse than the modern cloud, see The security myth: Why modern cloud file transfer infrastructure is more secure than on-prem

Couchdrop infrastructure & deployment

Built for the cloud era from the beginning, Couchdrop took the dated model of MFT, SFTP, and EDI and made it modern. Because these models were anchored around large enterprises, they were typically comprehensive solutions, but also incredibly complicated and inaccessible to SMBs and SMEs.

Couchdrop flipped that model on its head, designing the platform to be simple and straightforward from the beginning. Users can connect platforms and set up transfers in minutes compared to months, and need no baseline knowledge or even need to know what a file transfer protocol is

This simplicity is apparent right away. Sign up is simple with no credit card or sales call required, and all new registrations get instant access for 14 days. There's no infrastructure to maintain, no software to install, and no security patches to worry about. Updates are applied automatically without the need to stop operations for maintenance or updates.

With this approach, secure file transfers are incredibly simple and accessible to anyone. Setup is straightforward and easy, and the automation capabilities allow Couchdrop to work reliably in the background until it's time to add more transfers or update workflows.

Platform integrations

CrushFTP Platform integrations

Since CrushFTP is self-hosted, it works primarily with local storage on your infrastructure. While it offers some integrations with cloud services like Google Drive, Azure, and S3, these are additional connections rather than its core architecture.

Connecting to cloud storage also involves a complicated integration setup for each individual storage connection. A Google Drive connection, for example, involves manually connecting to the Google Drive API, matching the redirect URI, extracting client and secret information, and much more.

So while the integrations do exist, they require some technical knowledge and have a learning curve to figure out the setup.

Couchdrop platform integrations

For Couchdrop, the cloud isn't an add-on bolted on to an on-prem solution. Instead, it's been designed for the cloud from the beginning.

As a result, Couchdrop is able to connect to multiple different types of cloud systems, including all of the most popular cloud storage platforms. Whether you use SharePoint, Google Workspace, Azure, S3, Dropbox, or other platforms, the native integrations make integrations simple, with most only needing a quick OAuth authorization.

But cloud storage isn't the only type of platform integration Couchdrop has. You can also use the Couchdrop agent to connect to on-prem file servers and NAS devices, then easily transfer files between the two. This means you can connect legacy systems and modern cloud applications and easily and securely send data between them.

This is further enhanced by the way Couchdrop storage integrations work. Instead of using a storage layer to temporarily hold files before moving them to the final destination, Couchdrop facilitates transfers directly between your existing storage. This means your files aren't ever stored by Couchdrop at any point, and you always maintain full visibility, ownership, and control of your data.

Because the cloud is constantly evolving, Couchdrop's connections are growing rapidly as well. Along with storage, you can connect to partner servers, send log events to SIEMs, automate moving files into cloud databases, queues, & warehouses, and quickly integrate with popular providers to send or receive data from them.

Essentially, Couchdrop is managed file transfer and iPaaS bundled into one simple platform with an emphasis on being easy to set up, use, and manage.

Security & Compliance

Crush FTP security & compliance

One of the major differences between the platforms is in security and compliance, and this is one spot where Couchdrop wins hands down.

This isn't to say that CrushFTP is insecure. The product provides various security features, including secure protocols, encryption, and authentication methods. They also help pre-empt common hack attempts and bots that scan for passwords, automatically banning known IPs to help bolster security.

These are all helpful, but they don't address the underlying issue. Self-hosted solutions that are accessible through the public internet always have the issue of patching and updates. When your organization is in charge of managing servers, scheduling maintenance and update windows, and testing if the updates break fundamental configurations, these updates can get pushed back further and further. So then if a breach does happen--which affected many CrushFTP instances--the damage can be wide-reaching and catastrophic.

In the case of CrushFTP in particular, one G2 user claimed that "The server is guaranteed to be hacked sooner or later. Even in the DMZ, with DMZ features, with a firewall in front of it and host-based IPS." This user went on to elaborate that one of their servers was compromised.

Couchdrop security & compliance

Because Couchdrop is completely in the cloud, missing patches or updates isn't an issue. Updates are delivered automatically as soon as they're available, and security issues are patched without requiring downtime or breaking vital configurations.

But the auto updates aren't the only advantage Couchdrop has when it comes to security.

Along with instant updates and not storing user files, the platform includes comprehensive security features like user root folder isolation, IP firewalling, two-factor authentication, and detailed auditing. Unsecure protocols like FTP can be restricted at the account and user level, along with other security controls that can be customized to the needs of the organization.

Couchdrop maintains multiple compliance certifications, including SOC2 and UK NCSC Cyber Essentials. A separate HIPAA-compliant infrastructure is available with a signed BAA as well. The company also meets GDPR standards.

The modern cloud architecture itself also has security upsides. The SaaS infrastructure is constantly monitored for threats and unusual behaviours. And, if a threat actor were to gain access, containerization helps limit the damage and stop it from spreading. Individual containers can be taken offline and updated without affecting others, so other features will continue to work normally. Detailed remediation also helps to address worst-case scenarios and ensure user data is protected at all points.

With an advanced cloud architecture, granular access & security controls, and automatic updates, Couchdrop security is second-to-none in the file transfer space.

Automation Capabilities

Crush FTP automation capabilities

CrushFTP provides automation capabilities through its Crushjobs feature, a separate engine for running automation jobs available only on Enterprise plans.

Crushjobs allows scheduled tasks for file operations including actions like file transfers, PGP encryption/decryption, and third-party program execution. Many of these tasks are pre-configured and can be selected in the Designer, CrushFTP's visual builder.

The designer gives you many options over how files are transferred, with the tradeoff that you have to manage the settings yourself. For instance, you can copy a file to a remote destination automatically, but you need to set how long to wait before attempting retries and when to give up on the action completely. Plus, you must also specify what to do if the step fails, like if a particular step failure triggers an email to an admin.

Couchdrop automation capabilities

Automations in Couchdrop are created using a visual automation tree. Select a trigger (such as scheduling polls using the built-in scheduler), then set actions and sub-actions to create multi-step workflows.

Actions range from renaming files after an upload to complex flows involving PGP encryption/decryption, compression/decompression, and conditional routing. New actions are added regularly, such as the recent addition of file transformation that lets Couchdrop modify file contents and convert file types.

Our goal is to make automating file transfers accessible to every business, because automating regular flows saves time, conserves resources, and reduces the likelihood of errors. For example, if you have to get the same files from the same provider at the same time interval, then there's no reason that the flow can't be done automatically.

The tradeoff for simplicity is that you don't get as much fine-tuning with settings. Timeouts and automated retries, for instance, are automatically set and not adjustable. However, we've found that the vast majority of users don't miss having these adjustments, and many prefer not having to think about or worry about getting them right.

File sending & receiving tools

Crush FTP file sending & receiving tools

For collecting and sharing files, CrushFTP offers file sharing capabilities through its "WebInterface", a browser-based method to set up simple file transfers and/or share files with temporary links.

Web portals are brandable and can used by partners and can accept files via drag-and-drop. Other features of WebInterface include viewing online docs/sheets/slides and quick preview & slide show, something not currently possible in Couchdrop.

CrushFTP can also accept files by email attachment.

Advanced Download and Advanced Uploads (that allow for improved performance) are only available on the Enterprise plan. Enterprise plans also include additional sharing features like direct sharing with other users.

Couchdrop file sending & receiving tools

Couchdrop provides multiple methods for sharing and collecting files, including mailboxes for receiving email attachments directly into your cloud storage, secure branded upload portals, and shared links with configurable permissions and expiry options.

This functionality, combined with Couchdrop's integrations, means that external users can send files to and receive files directly from a cloud storage directory without sharing storage access. Having multiple sharing and collection methods can also be particularly valuable for less technical users who need to exchange files securely without worrying about setting up or connecting with clients. Users can simply email attachments or use a web portal, and files automatically appear in designated cloud storage locations.

The simplicity is compounded by features like Shared Actions. With a Shared Action, a manager can set up an automation using the visual builder and share it with another user. Then that user can simply choose to upload a file to run that action.

For example, a bank may require PGP encryption, a rename, and receiving the file via SFTP. A non-technical user can add a file, and that series of actions will run instantly without them needing to know what's happening under the hood.

Pricing model

CrushFTP pricing model

Pricing on CrushFTP is broken down between normal licenses and Enterprise licenses. Both use a perpetual license model, meaning there aren't any ongoing costs (not for the license, at least). Tiers include different features and benefits and user counts, but the "unlimited user" add-on is a trivial cost if needed.

Enterprise licenses include additional maintenance fees but come with additional support options like phone and screen sharing support. Since the maintenance fee is mandatory, it's essentially a subscription that includes updates to the latest versions.

Licenses that don't include yearly maintenance either need to purchase a higher tier or pay an upgrade cost when a new version of CrushFTP is released. Because of all the different licenses and tiers, it can be challenging to figure out the actual costs before getting in touch, and it's common for businesses to get in touch directly for accurate pricing.

For the base license costs, CrushFTP will come out cheaper for a lot of businesses. However, this doesn't take into account having to have VMs/file transfer infrastructure and the management costs that go with that, plus the ongoing cost for support detracts from the perpetual license.

Couchdrop pricing model

Couchdrop pricing is straightforward and easy to understand, which is why there aren't dozens of add-ons and extra fees to get the functionality you need. Simply choose the plan that your business fits into, and that's it. All plans use a month-to-month pricing model with no hidden costs.

With this approach, you get predictable monthly costs without lock-in and always have access to the latest features and security updates without additional upgrade fees or having to worry about licenses.

Support is included in all tiers at no additional cost, and the team has consistently won awards from G2 for Best Support.

Product support and user experience

CrushFTP product support and user experience

On G2, CrushFTP is currently rated 3.3 stars out of 5. Customers are happy with the value, but have difficulties managing licenses and integrating with some operating systems.

To reiterate what we mentioned above, Security is a major concern. Some users also note that the interface feels quite dated compared to modern applications.

For support, CrushFTP is generally seen as having a good, responsive support team. Customer support was mentioned as being a highlight from one reviewer, with CrushFTP themselves claiming that users can always get in touch with a person, and that the goal is to reply within an hour with a real response.

However, only email support is included in the base license support. To get access to other methods like phone or video call, you need to pay a recurring support fee or upgrade to Enterprise (which has maintenance fees on top of the base price).

Couchdrop product support and user experience

G2 reviews score Couchdrop higher at 4.9 stars out of 5. Customers love how simple and straightforward it is to implement and connect to storage platforms, as well as the web interface and ease of setting up workflows. Simplicity is often highlighted as a strong point, and even some non-technical users have submitted reviews elaborating on how Couchdrop is easy to use.

As for customer support, this has always been an area of focus for Couchdrop. Support is often mentioned as a major strength, and has led to Couchdrop's frequent and consistent awards from G2. The support team is comprised entirely of technical experts who understand Couchdrop better than anyone and always provide personalized, timely responses.

Again, this support is not an additional cost and there are no limitations on getting in touch.

Who Should Choose Each Solution?

For modern businesses, Couchdrop is the stronger choice in most cases due to simplicity, security, and versatility.

Where CrushFTP might be the better choice is for organizations with power users who want complete control over job settings and the ability to fully optimize aspects like job scheduling. It can also be a good fit for organizations that require complete control over their file transfer infrastructure and already have it in place.

This can also make CrushFTP the cheaper option due to the perpetual license. The base licenses are one-off costs, and if the infrastructure is already in place, that won't be an additional cost to worry about (though it will still need to be managed).

However, in most cases, Couchdrop delivers better performance and security while being much easier to deploy, configure, and use. It's one simple platform for sending, receiving, and automating transfers while including everything you need for secure file transfers.

And it's hard to understate how much of an impact having no infrastructure can have across the board. Updates are more frequent. Security is better. Resource cost is lower. No one has to make sure an off-site VM is functioning properly. It's incredibly simple and cuts away a massive amount of time sinks that would be spent fiddling with complicated settings. Plus, Couchdrop can scale to meet any need automatically.

You can see the difference by trying Couchdrop for yourself. All new accounts automatically get a free trial with instant access and no credit card required. Simply sign up and get started in minutes. To get started, you can register for an account and start your trial now
